Steiff Mad Hatter Teddy Bear is Steiff’s interpretation of the original Mad Hatter found in the wonderful stories of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ written by Lewis Carroll and first published in 1865. Since then millions of children have been enthralled by the story books and in 1951 Walt Disney made an animated film of the book. So here Steiff have brought to life an amazing Mad Hatter who is made from the finest beige mohair and is fully jointed with a head which is loosely attached to the body so you can pose him looking in different directions. As always Steiff design and make the most wonderful clothes and so he is wearing a checked waistcoat of green, red and white. A cuffed green frock coat and bright red spotted bow tie. Finally he is wearing his famous ‘top hat’ which has a band of red silk and the famous price tag as described in the book. It reads 10/6d which is 10 shillings and 6 pence or 1/2 guinea in pre-decimalized British money. The Mad Hatter was always full of silly riddles and asked Alice ‘Why is a raven like a writing desk?’. ‘I do not know’ said Alice. ‘Neither do I’ said the Mad Hatter! Limited edition of just 1,500 pieces and his gold-plated button in the ear is embossed with an elephant motif to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the button in the ear. Surface washable.
